Water Woes

October 25, 2006 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

It takes 11,000 litres of water to make a quarter pounder. Every burger I don’t eat adds on to my personal water credit. I can now shower non-stop for 15 years on a clear conscience.

Also, my personal theory on how to aid drought-stricken farmers. Instead of paying aid for them to stay where they are and produce nothing, pay them to move to wetter climates and grow appropriate crops. They can move further north where there’s more year-round rainfall. Like a rainforest. Strip the rainforest, plant crops, profit.

Hey, it works in Brazil…

Do the math

For some time now, supermarkets have been offering 4c/litre off for fuel with a voucher provided if you spend $30 or more in the shop.
Now, Mobil are offering the same if you spend $5 or more in the servo shop.
Now, this is good, in that if you regularly get a drink and something to eat, or milk and bread and the paper when you get fuel, you’ll get a saving. But if you go specifically to Mobil to take advantage of this, spend your $5 in store and save your 4c, on an average tank, you’re actually behind. Work it with me:
Let’s say 50 litre tank, average. Maximum saving is 50l * $0.04 = $2.00
You get this saving by spending and extra $5.00.
Your net change, therefore, is -$3.00 - ie You Lose.

But you feel you’ve won, cos you’ve stuck it to the oil companies by saving 4c/litre. However, given that on most retail items there is a 30% margin, you’ve actually just added 90c to the oil companies’ bottom line.

So, to really screw them over, what you want to do is buy at least 125 litres at a time. That way, you essentially get $5 worth of items for free. Yeah, that’ll work. Buy more fuel to get free stuff, that’ll really show them whose bitch is whom.
