Unlike Windows, if your display in Ubuntu freezes, there are a few things you can do to try to sort it out before you hit the big round button.
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will reset the X display, basically logging you out, but also restarting the display
sudo dexconf will reset your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to the default, in case you’ve completely screwed things up!
Ctrl+Alt+Fn will switch you to a new tty display. Remember, linux is a multiuser system. Sometimes this is quicker than opening terminal, and it’s fullscreen!
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart and sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart will restart Gnome or KDE Desktom Managers, depending on which one broke for you.
